Protein Contribution Diet (DAP)

Modern Aesthetic Medicine Blog

The protein intake diet is based on proteins with carbohydrate restriction, at least in the early phases. Subsequently, new foods will be incorporated to achieve an adequate balance and a new way of eating.

To treat overweight, it will be necessary to provide at the right time:

  • specific amino acids that promote protein synthesis and the synthesis of neuromediators of mood, hunger and satiety,
  • adequate carbohydrates to regulate appetite and fat storage, always respecting the moments of insulin secretion,
  • fatty acids necessary to control the synthesis of new fatty acids and promote their integration into cell membranes,
  • contribution of micronutrients, which are essential in all metabolic reactions,
  • daily intakes of food, which will be distributed in four or five meals according to the rhythms of cortisol and insulin.

First Days of Diet

During the first phase, the almost total reduction in carbohydrate intake generates a mild hypoglycemia that is detected by the pancreas and the central nervous system. Said hypoglycemia triggers a series of reactions:

  • Fall in insulin secretion: The decrease in insulin concentration causes, in turn, a decrease in the entry of glucose into the cells of insulin-sensitive tissues (muscles and fat tissue).
  • Raise the production of hormones that increase the enzymes that produce endogenous glucose through glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis.

The increase in these hormones releases significant amounts of free fatty acids from adipose tissue. These are partially taken up by the liver, where they are transformed into ketone bodies. Ketone bodies will meet 80% of the metabolic needs of our nervous system in the face of low glucose concentrations.

This metabolic process is complex and requires a few days for our body to adapt; but it is very easy to reverse the situation when we inappropriately introduce a prohibited food. This is why it is important to be strict during the early stages. With this diet, it is expected to instruct the patient on what foods he should consume and how to combine them in the daily menu.

Like all diets, it requires the commitment of the patient and the combination with exercises and a healthy lifestyle to obtain better results. However, it is a very tolerable diet, easy to follow and without going hungry.
